Theresa: New GM Seatbelt Technology Saves 5-Star Safety Ratings

http://wardsauto.com/ar/gm_seatbelt_technology_110502/

From this article:

"Industry safety experts estimate vehicles once performing at a level earning the highest 5-star rating would receive a 3-star assessment under the new testing, and safety continues to be a key differentiator for auto makers on the dealership floor."

Kathleen - please read! Research & Development

Kathleen - in the financial section I will be proposing a 20% increase in GM's R&D spending.  Annually that amount is around $8 billion so the increase would be $1.6 annually. I will also discuss the advantages of GM using equity investments (GM Ventures) in other companies doing research as a less risky way of achieving strides in innovations/improvements versus doing their own R&D. So I think they should also increase the amount of money dedicated to GM Ventures as well as increasing their own efforts.

This article has a lot of information:

Traffic Congestion in Beijing

As everyone who lives in Beijing knows, China’s capitol city has a traffic problem. There are already 4.7 million cars on Beijing’s streets, and that number was expected to double by 2015 if the government didn’t take action. In late December 2010, the Beijing government acted with what some call  the “toughest congestion-tackling measure in history.” Parking fees in the city were increased, vehicles were restricted from use on one day of the week based on license plate numbers, and a lottery system was introduced to limit new car registrations. For 2011, the Beijing Municipal Government decided to restrict the sales of new cars to 240,000, against the 700,000 new vehicles that were registered last year.

UAW Workers Offered Extra Icing At Ford

http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmuller/2011/10/04/uaw-workers-offered-extra-icing-at-ford/

UAW's tentative agreement with Ford involves more money than the one negotiated with GM - a reflection of Ford's relatively stronger financial position.

 - larger signing bonus
- bigger inflation-protection payouts
- more in profit sharing
- incentives for older workers to retire - making room for thousands of new, lower-paid workers
-  Ford to invest $16 billion in U.S. products and factories, adding 5,750 new manufacturing jobs, on top of 7,000 previously announced jobs
- profit sharing - GM capped at $12,000/worker - at Ford there is no limit

- Ford will pay larger retirement incentives than GM

- Ford committed to build more vehicles and auto components in the U.S. to create jobs

- $6.2 billion to upgrade and retool factories, partly to prepare for work being shifted here from Mexico, China, Japan and Europe

$555 million at an underutilized plant in Michigan to prepare for the next-generation Mustang and to provide a second manufacturing site for the Ford Fusion, currently built only in Mexico. UAW leaders said Ford plans to export some of the 200,000 vehicles that will be built there

- Ford's overall labor costs will rise 1% as a result of the agreement

- investing $1 billion in Kansas City where next-generation F-series pickup truck and Transit commercial van (currently built in Europe) will be produced

- $639 million in Louisville, KY for launch of next Ford Escape and another, unannounced, vehicle will be built

Ford To Shift Factory Jobs To U.S. From Mexico, Asia

http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmuller/2011/10/04/ford-to-shift-factory-jobs-to-u-s-from-mexico-asia/

FORD - As a result of new labor agreement with UAW, 12,000 new jobs will result because of the decision to shift some work from Mexico, China and Japan.

Includes 6,000 new workers at lower pay scale.

This is said to improve Ford's competitiveness.
